Duty, Dignity and Discipline at the foothills of Vadachennimalai
About Arignar Anna Government Arts College, Attur (Vadachennimalai)
Arignar Anna Government Arts College is situated at the foothills of Vadachennimalai (North Chenni Hill), a small hill near Attur associated with Lord Bala Thandayuthapani, and is circumfused by the Kalvarayan hills and Vasishta river to the north and the Kolli-Pachamalai hills and Vellar river to the south. The foundation stone for its building was laid in March 1972 by then-Governor K.K. Shah, and the college was formally opened in October 1973 by minister K. Rajaram. Though originally established for men, women students were admitted from 1975 onward, making it a co-educational institution. The college was affiliated to Periyar University, Salem in 1998-99 and was accredited with a 'B' grade by NAAC in February 2005. Named after C.N. Annadurai (Arignar Anna), the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu whose guiding principles were Duty, Dignity and Discipline, the college sits on an expansive 128-acre (50-hectare) campus with roughly 6,300 square metres of built-up area. It offers programmes across Tamil, History and other arts and science disciplines, including M.Phil research options, and continues to serve the rural communities of the Kalvarayan and Kolli hills region surrounding Attur.
