About Arignar Anna Government Arts College, Namakkal
Arignar Anna Government Arts College, Namakkal was established in the 1968-69 academic year and named after C.N. Annadurai (Arignar Anna), the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The founding effort was driven by local leaders including Pavalar P. Muthusamy, a former MLA of Namakkal, and V. Chockalingam, a former Namakkal Revenue Divisional Officer. Originally affiliated to the University of Madras and temporarily housed in a government high school, the college moved to its permanent campus on Namakkal-Mohanur Road in 1970-71 and today functions under Periyar University, Salem, holding a re-accredited B grade from NAAC. The institution now offers 14 undergraduate programmes, 11 postgraduate programmes, and 8 each of M.Phil and Ph.D programmes across departments such as English, Economics, Physics, Chemistry and Botany. Its emblem, featuring a notebook, pen and traditional lamp alongside Namakkal's rock fort and temples, reflects the college's rootedness in local heritage alongside its educational mission. The college continues to serve first-generation learners from Namakkal town and its surrounding rural taluks.
