About Government Arts College, Coimbatore
Government Arts College, Coimbatore is one of Tamil Nadu's oldest institutions of higher education, tracing its origin to 1852. The institution developed from an Anglo-vernacular school into a first-grade college in 1870 and later expanded its higher education programmes. The college received autonomous status in 1987 and is affiliated to Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. It continues to function as a Government institution under the Government of Tamil Nadu. The college is located on Arts College Road in central Coimbatore and provides undergraduate, postgraduate and research education across Arts, Science, Commerce, Computer Applications and related disciplines. The institution has 23 departments, a library with more than 34,000 books, departmental libraries, digital library facilities and extensive computer infrastructure. The college also provides hostel facilities for men and women, sports, auditorium, canteen, museum, green house and other student-support facilities. Government Arts College has an active placement cell that conducts campus and off-campus recruitment drives, career guidance programmes, soft-skill training and job fairs. Its 2025 placement records include recruitment activities involving TCS, Accenture, Sutherland, Eveready, Deloitte and other organisations. The college is ranked 67th in the NIRF 2025 College category and continues to support higher education opportunities for students from diverse social and economic backgrounds.
