About Government Arts College for Women, Salem
Government Arts College for Women, Salem is the only government college for women in the entire Salem district, built on a 14.71-acre campus at the foothills of the Yercaud hill resort. The college began as a government men's college in 1972 and was converted into a women's college in 1979. Since then it has steadily added programmes, from B.A. and B.Sc. courses in the 1970s and 80s to B.Com in 1981, M.Sc. Mathematics and B.Sc. Computer Science in 1997, and BCA, M.Sc. Chemistry, M.Sc. Computer Science and M.A. Tamil Literature by 2010. It is affiliated to Periyar University, Salem and has been re-accredited with an 'A' grade by NAAC in its third cycle. With around 3,500 students and a faculty of 150, the college maintains a library holding 68,857 books, along with separate hostel facilities of 125-bed capacity each for boys and girls (a combined 250 originally provided by the Government) and departmental laboratories including a Language Lab and a Computer Literacy Programme (CLP) lab. Per the NIRF 2025 report, a total of 403 undergraduate and 35 postgraduate students were placed, at reported median packages of roughly Rs 2.25-2.30 LPA. The college ranks in the 151-200 band in NIRF 2025 and continues to serve as the primary access point to higher education for women across Salem city and its suburbs.
