Government Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, Chennai
Pioneering Center for Medical Rehabilitation & Prosthetics in India
About Government Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, Chennai
Government Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine (GIRM) is a state-owned institution and hospital situated in K.K. Nagar, Chennai. Founded in 1979, it is funded and managed by the Government of Tamil Nadu and is attached to the Directorate of Medical Education. It is affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai and recognized by the UGC. GIRM is a pioneering center in India for medical rehabilitation, particularly noted for its historic contributions to prosthetics — including the development of the 'Madras Foot' in 1968, a design later adapted into the well-known Jaipur foot. Tamil Nadu was the first state in India to start a three-year diploma course in orthotics and prosthetics in the late 1960s, conducted through the orthopaedics department of Madras Medical College, which laid the groundwork for GIRM's establishment. The institute is also the only government-run centre in Tamil Nadu that manufactures prosthetic limbs. Today, GIRM offers a Bachelor of Physiotherapy (B.P.T.) programme, with classrooms equipped with audio-visual aids, specialized labs for anatomy, physiology and biomechanics, a library, and computer/internet facilities for academic use.
