The Regional Institute of Ophthalmology and Government Ophthalmic Hospital in Egmore, Chennai, popularly known as the Egmore Eye Hospital, was established in 1819. It is the oldest eye hospital in Asia and the second oldest specialized eye hospital in the world, next only to Moorfields in the UK. Affiliated with The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University and functioning under the Directorate of Medical Education, the institute offers specialized postgraduate medical degrees in ophthalmology (MS, DO) as well as B.Sc. and Diploma courses in Optometry. It is a world-renowned center of excellence for eye care, surgical training, and visual science research.
