About Vasan Institute of Ophthalmology & Research, Chennai
Vasan Institute of Ophthalmology & Research (VIOR) is an educational unit of Vasan Foundation, the education arm of the Vasan Healthcare Group — one of the world's largest eye-care networks. Founded to build a pipeline of practice-ready primary eye-care professionals, VIOR offers three optometry programmes affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University: the flagship B.Optom (4 years plus 1-year internship, 20 seats), a B.Optom Lateral Entry route for existing diploma holders (direct 2nd-year entry, 3 years plus internship), and the M.Optom postgraduate programme (2 years, 15 seats). VIOR describes itself as 'clinic-first' — 60% of the curriculum is practical, with clinical exposure from year one in the refraction lab, hospital internship rotations, and community eye-care camps. The institute operates across two campuses, Chennai (West Mambalam) and Salem, and has produced 9+ graduating batches to date. Faculty include internationally trained optometry educators (alumni of institutions such as BITS Pilani and the University of Houston, per official claims) who are also practising clinicians. A dedicated Careers & Placements cell runs on-campus drives with companies including Bausch + Lomb, Titan Eye+ and Lenskart, and highlights career pathways into hospitals, retail, industry and academia in India, the Middle East and the UK.
